Are You Happy ?

March 22, 2019 in Happiness, Anxiety and Depression, The Tough Stuff - 5 min read
Take a second and close your eyes and really think about your life. I’ll wait……… Done ? Are you smiling or are you sad ? At this exact moment right now, can you confidently say that you’re happy ? If not, why? Is it a personal reason like family issues or you aren’t happy at work or not in your career yet? Is it financial like bills, debt, your savings isn’t where it’s supposed to be ? Do you not have the apartment you want, the car you want, the house you want to own, the perfect relationship you have in your head? Did you think you would be farther along in life by now ?
To be honest, I’m not here to give you the answers on how to get everywhere you want to be. I know better because I know I don’t know it all. I’m still figuring out this life thing myself but I can tell you that you’re not alone. If you read my About Me , you would know that I was just as confused as you about finding my purpose, who I was supposed to be, how to go about it and crumbling under the unrealistic standards society places on us to always have it together.
You think celebrities have it together ? Successful people ? I doubt it. I believe no one does. We can go down this rabbit hole forever but one thing I’ve learned is that when it comes to happiness, overthinking does nothing. Neither does feeling like a victim. I recently learned to live in the moment. To be more present instead of stressing myself out about the future which is really something that hasn’t even happened yet or even set to happen in the first place. These are some ways that I remain happy in the present:

1. Smile.

Be appreciative and give yourself credit. You’re alive, you’re breathing, you made it this far. Everything you’ve been through, you survived and grew from. How old are you? Multiply that by 365. That’s how many days you’ve made it this far, you can keep going.

2.Cry if you need to cry.

Letting it out is always better than keeping it in. Whether it be venting to someone you trust or laying in bed watching a chic flick or sad movie while eating pizza and a burger and fries, do what you need to do to. But don’t stay there for too long !

3. DANCE !

Everyone loves to dance. Whether you’re good at it or not, it’s a great way to let off steam and have a good work out.

4. Actually workout

You can’t help but focus on not dying when you’re working out. One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned from working out is breathing. So many people don’t breathe correctly. A while ago, Casey taught me to breathe in when it’s easy and breathe out when it’s hard and ever since I catch myself doing it when I’m not even working out. If I’m bringing heavy bags all at once, I breathe in when I’m picking them up and out while I’m running to put them down lol. I like a challenge. What can I say. Plus the endorphins you get after a good session will have you feeling so happy on cloud 9. If you’re stuck on how to start, check out this post where I talk about my favorite fitness girls to follow for inspiration.

5. Just breathe

Close your eyes. Inhale. Exhale. Be one with your body. Do it as many times as you need. In general if I feel really stressed. Like an anxiety attack is coming stressed, I stop whatever I’m doing and breathe. Sometimes I even add some stretching or counting into the mix and it really helps.

6. Make a sweet (but healthy treat).

Okay it doesn’t always have to be healthy. It’s okay to indulge every now and then. No one can deny the satisfaction of stuffing your face with something sweet or savory. Everything feels so right in that moment.

7. Listen to music.

Nuff said.

8. Write.

I’ve always been a writer. Whether it be my diary or journal or in my planner or notes on my phone. It helps me organize my thoughts, figure out exactly how I’m feeling and why so I can brainstorm an attack plan to resolve my situation and feel better. Right now as I’m writing this, I have butterflies mixed with anxiety because I’m in my zone doing what I do best. It feels right.

9. Read.

This is another great way to distract yourself but in a good way. Especially if it’s a self help book or a funny one or catching up in your favorite series. I miss that feeling. I need to read more myself.

10. Know that life is a journey.

Not a destination. You’re here but you have so much more to go. Everything happens for a reason. Most rejections are saving grace. Your good and bad experiences are the perfect concoction that makes you who you are right now. Don’t give up. I’m rooting for you.
