Having Confidence To Try Something New

August 7, 2019 in Confidence, The Tough Stuff - 5 min read
When it comes to trying something new, a lot of people think it only takes courage when it actually takes confidence as well. The biggest thing that stops most people from doing something they’ve never done before is fear of the unknown which makes sense. The second you leap into something you’ve never done before (because let’s be real, there’s no baby steps in this kind of situation), you’re letting go of not knowing and controlling what comes next. You don’t know what’s gonna happen while you’re leaping and you don’t know what will happen once you land. Hell, you might not even land on your feet. You might do a little trip, roll, stumble, hop before you can safely stand on both and that’s okay and where the courage comes in.

Don’t get me wrong, no matter how much courage and confidence you have, you can’t take the fear away completely but because you have both and not one or the other, you’ll feel less uneasy.

But what if you knew who you are, what you want out of life and are willing to do whatever it takes to create the life you deserve? That sounds much more relieving and doable right? I know. That’s where confidence comes in. Don’t get me wrong, no matter how much courage and confidence you have, you can’t take the fear away completely but because you have both and not one or the other, you’ll feel less uneasy. Think about a time when you had no other choice but to do something new. Like your first day at a new school. Your first kiss. Your first real relationship. They’re all nerve racking but exciting at the same time. Firsts are inevitable. You can’t escape them but when you know who you are, you can rely on yourself more and less on the situation and all the other factors that come with it that you also have no control over. You can walk into something confident that no matter what happens, you will listen to your institution, use your voice and manveer the unknown the best you can.

You accept that you’ll learn along the way and instead of second guessing yourself if you’re ready for the adventure ahead, you’ll be asking the adventure if it’s ready for you!

When you’re confident, you acknowledge that you don’t know it all and that’s okay. You accept that you’ll learn along the way and instead of second guessing yourself if you’re ready for the adventure ahead, you’ll be asking the adventure if it’s ready for you! Life is about progression and in my post about progression vs. perfection, I talk about how the “right time” never comes and you can’t let that stop you from following that voice within you that’s telling you that the time is now! No more excuses. No more brushing it off. Yes you will be starting from the bottom but everyone does. The only thing you need to focus on is how confident you are within yourself. If you need some more time to work on that, that’s another story but honestly, you’ll never be 100% ready.

It is also important to know that you can’t rely on people to have the confidence for you. It’s great to have support but if you don’t believe it yourself, you’ll just be going in circles. On the other hand, if people don’t have confidence in you to do what you told them you would do, don’t take it to heart. This is your journey and no one else can go on it but you. It’s not for them to see or understand. As long as you’re confident in yourself, you got this!

I can’t stress enough how important it is to find communities of people who are doing what you’re doing, committed or even in the beginning stages of starting.

Another key to having confidence in any situation other than knowing who you are, listening to your intuition and using your voice is planning and finding people like you. Like mentioned above, when you’re trying something new, it’s impossible to predict and prepare 100% for what’s ahead but you can at least find out what you’re getting yourself into. Though you may feel alone, there is someone out there who has done what you’re going to do already. They’ve most likely felt exactly how you feel right now, did it anyway and shared their experience with others to inspire and encourage them. This is where the internet comes in! Google, google, google. The answers are out there and with the magic of YouTube, you can even find a visual aid to prepare you for this new chapter in your journey even more. I can’t stress enough how important it is to find communities of people who are doing what you’re doing, committed or even in the beginning stages of starting. Everyone will have something insightful to share. It provides a sense of belonging, understanding and acceptance that you won’t get anywhere else. You’ll never feel alone and have unlimited resources to learning more and becoming a well versed person on the topic. However, don’t live vicariously through them. Live it for yourself!

No more waiting around asking yourself for months, even years what if. The answer to that question is on the other side of taking that leap of courage and confidence.

Long story short, trying something new is an exciting time in your life so embrace it! Empower yourself by having the confidence you need, find out as much as you can and as Nike says, just do it! The time is now and I believe in you. No more waiting around asking yourself for months, even years what if. The answer to that question is on the other side of taking that leap of courage and confidence. You’ll learn as you go and most importantly, grow as a person in the process. You’ll surprise yourself on how much you didn’t know about yourself. Your perspective of life will probably change as well and I know you’ll inspire others so don’t forget to share your trials and triumphs. I can’t wait to hear all about them!
